In 1996 the recordable CD (CD-R) became mainstream thanks to HP including a Phillips-made recorder with their computers, changing the game for content owners at the time. Now-a-days it's difficult to find people using CD-Rs on a regular basis. While it appears content has left the shackles of a physical delivery mechanism in the rear-view and migrated to the cloud, it may surprise you that globally, half of all content is still consumed via a physical medium. After all, it was just last year (yes 2015) that global consumption of content via digital channels surpassed physical mediums for the first time. More digital photographs were taken in 2015 than all other years combined since digital photography became widespread in 2003. One would think this would grossly skew the physical to digital content delivery ratio, but it simply hasn't. CDs, DVDs, packaging supplies, on-demand disc publishing, legacy file-format conversions, distributing and archiving of content via physical mediums is alive and well. To celebrate 20 years of the CD-R, many of the most common items purchased have been reduced to the lowest prices in the industry yet. Your personal content concierge has all the details, here’s a quick breakdown. For starters, if you haven’t seen the new earth-friendly EcoPaks, now’s the time to take a look. EcoPaks are a hybrid between a Sleeve and a Digipak. EcoPaks have a spine like a Digipak plus the ease of carrying like a sleeve. Where they differ is they don’t have a plastic tray glued in like a Digipak, instead a foam hub is glued to the Ecopak and secures the disc in place, and they are produced in only 5 work days after art approval. Speaking of sleeves and digipaks. Sleeves are still a popular choice for economic but impactful presentations. Digipaks have always been the hip cousin of the Jewel Case, touting their semi-earth friendly style cardboard with a touch of plastic. With minimum quantities starting at 100, fast turn times of 7-10 days after art approval, and lowest prices to date on these items, they’re still a no-brainer. If you use traditional retail packaging or just need bulk discs your going to love latest prices. Quantities of 1,000 received a huge price drop. Custom printed blank discs and mailers remain one of the largest methods of physical content distribution today for Churches, Ministries, Evangelists, Medical Facilities, Legal and Law Enforcement agencies. Mailing media requires precise tolerances to be met, otherwise you’ll be paying to do it twice and nobody can afford the time and money loss. Printing and burning your own discs has never been more cost effective. Thermal and Inkjet CD-Rs and DVD-Rs are pennies on the dollar compared to 1996. Do you remember that a spindle of CD-Rs use to cost $100? My how time changes technology! We still offer over 100 styles of disc packaging to complete your physical content deliverable. In 2015 we had more disc printers purchased than in the last 10 years combined. Whether it was due to outdated gear, time for an upgrade or new acquires, we thought you’d like to know the most popular was Primera’s Bravo 4100. They beat out Microboard’s Print Factory Pro repeatedly, and why wouldn’t they, it’s a cool $500 more in your back pocket. And for the grande finale, something everybody uses in just about every gadget they own, at prices cheaper than Wally’s…batteries! But not just any old power sticks, Duracell Pro-cell, your welcome. It’s hard to believe it was 20 years ago (in 1996) that the CD-R became integrated at the consumer level thanks to Hewlett Packard’s introduction of the Phillips-made CD-Recordable drive in HP computers. We hope you enjoyed a recap of the last 20 years of physical content delivery. Your personal content concierge is ready to assist you.
